Get Your Home Winter-Ready

Thank you Jennings Builders Supply & Hardware for sharing these great tips for keeping your home warm, protected and efficient this winter.

    Windows & Doors

Check out this excellent infographic showing common trouble areas for heat loss.

    • Check for gaps and drafts. Caulk can help seal cracks and openings around trim, between trim and frame, and at mitered joints.Weatherstripping can provide airtight barriers around your operable components.
    • Consider replacing aging or single-pane windows with more energy efficient double-pane styles. Contact us for a quote
    • Clean and store exterior screens for double-pane windows  to help with solar gains, esp. on south and east facing windows. Replace screen door inserts with solid storm inserts.
    Roof, Chimney & Gutters

    • Check trees surrounding your home for limbs that need to be trimmed or removed.
    • Clean and repair gutters to help properly divert melting snow and ice from your home’s exterior.
    • Inspect roof for missing or loose shingles as well as points where shingles meet flashing, bricks, plumbing stacks for sealant deterioration.
Check out these tips from our friends at CertainTeed.
    • Inspect chimney for nesting animals and install a chimney cap/screen to keep rodents and birds from entering during colder months.
    • Sweep out your fireplace and make sure your flue is in working order – both open and closed.

    • Protect your pipes. Wrap or cover exposed pipes in unheated areas of your home such as attics, crawl spaces, or the garage. Foam covers are inexpensive options.
    • Inspect attic to make sure insulation exists as an appropriate depth. The chart below from the U.S. Department of Energy shows recommended insulation values for specific zones. (WNC is in Zone 4)
